Sustainability is at the heart of all Lucent Lighting operations.

As a company, we recognise that lighting still accounts for nearly 5% of global C02 emissions. This means we need to continually be seeking to reuse, reduce and recycle in our business practices.

Lighting for Good

In 2018, Temeloy Lighting created the ‘Lighting for Good’ thinktank, and Lucent was one of the very first supporters. Lighting for Good is governed by a charter to "evolve innovation, services and reliability towards sustainability in the lighting industry". Through our work with the group, we have implemented the below changes:

  • All Lucent packaging is now 100% recyclable all the way from the paper tape to the ink used on our boxes.

  • An in-house cardboard bailer has been installed to ensure all our recyclable cardboard is collected and recycled by a designated waste management company.
  • Throughout the design process we have assessed the materials used in the manufacture of our products and have, in some cases, been able to manufacture fixtures free from plastic (except in the COB).
  • We have always conserved an element of modularity in our downlights as they evolved from the MR16 fixtures. This means that as innovations in light sources evolve, we are able to quickly change the source within the downlights without having to dispose of the fixture and start again.

As a business we now have the understanding that you do not have to compromise the architectural aesthetics in order to incorporate sustainability and environmental awareness.

All Lucent packaging is now 100% recyclable all the way from the paper tape to the ink used on our boxes.

Carbon Neutral Status and Accreditations

Through an ongoing commitment to sustainability, Lucent has been successful in achieving our goal of becoming a carbon neutral business. All of the efforts we have made – including reducing plastics in our packaging, analysing our waste and recycling opportunities – ensured we could achieve this carbon neutral status.

This runs concurrently with Lucent’s accomplishment at the start of 2021 when we achieved ISO14001:2015 Environmental Management certification. This underpins our commitment to continually improving the company’s environmental management system, while continuing to integrate recognised environmental management best practice into our business operations.

Lucent has also been awarded a Silver rating with Ecovadis, the world’s most trusted business sustainability rating. The company scored in the top 91% percentile of all 75,000 companies assessed.

Furthermore, Lucent are members of the WEEE Producer Compliance Scheme through Lumicom, with the objective of minimising land-filling of electrical and electronic systems.

Continual Improvement

We’re working hard and always innovating to ensure our practices put sustainability as a key focus. The actions we are continuing to work on include:

  • Endeavouring to reduce our consumption of resources and improve the efficient use of those resources.
  • Manage waste generated from our business operations incorporating reduction, re-use and recycling in accordance with the principles of the waste hierarchy and manage our business operations to protect the environment and prevent pollution.
  • We will continue to ensure environmental criteria are taken into account in the procurement of goods and services
  • Continue our ongoing monitoring of the amount of electrical equipment we place on the market and ensuring provision is made for its effective recovery.

Global Environmental Project Support

Lucent has also invested in a number of global environmental projects around the world to ensure we balance out our own carbon footprint. We currently support two projects which are led by Carbon Neutral Britain™, the UK's leading carbon offsetting initiative. These are:

  • The Carbon Neutral Britain Climate Fund™ which supports Wind, Solar, Hydro and Cook Store projects focused on developing countries around the world. Most recently Carbon Neutral Britain™ have supported wind and solar projects in Chile, India and the Philippines, hydro power in Fiji and Brazil and Cook stove projects in Kenya

  • The Carbon Neutral Britain Woodland Fund™ supporting reforestations, deforestation prevention and woodland management projects focusing on the positive impact of local wildlife, ecology and biodiversity. Recent projects include woodland planting in the UK, reforestation after the wildfires in Australia and preventing deforestation in the Amazon. 10% of the budget is spent on sustainable projects in Britain, for Britain.

Lucent is proud to be part of the gathering momentum working towards becoming more environmentally conscious and proactive in conservation. We will continue to monitor, evaluate and develop our practices to ensure Lucent is a carbon-neutral enterprise.
