The Londoner Hotel

Friday, February 4th 2022

Eight stories up and eight stories down, The Londoner hotel is a feat of design, architecture and engineering. Lucent Lighting are proud to be a partner in this pioneering project, providing innovative architectural lighting solutions across this vast hotel.

Situated in Leicester Square, The Londoner is owned by the Edwardian group, who have described the venue as the world’s first ‘super-boutique hotel’, and it embraces the energy of the neighbourhood through its design and architecture. The site originally belonged to the West End Odeon Cinema, and some of the world’s best designers and engineers worked together on the latest build, from interior designers Yabu Pushelberg, global architects Woods Bagot to New York-born commissioning artist Ian Monroe. The group’s founder and chairman, Jasminder Singh, has described wanting to create “a centrepiece and anchor of the West End; a celebration of London; its history, aesthetic and people’. And they have certainly pulled off an impressive feat. There are 350 rooms, and six restaurants and bars that reflect the unique character of the city, as well as conference facilities. Whilst the top storey features a penthouse suite and the hotel’s signature restaurant, it also has one of the world’s deepest habitable basements, which has earned it the nickname ‘the iceberg hotel.’ This incredible basement hosts six subterranean levels, brimming with fun - including numerous bars, two cinemas, a spa and wellness centre and even a 1000 capacity ballroom.

Such a unique space presented an interesting lighting challenge. There was a need to achieve balance between drama, functionality and also natural and artificial light in the basement areas. Lucent worked closely with the hotel group and Inverse Lighting Design to supply a number of professional lighting solutions, from 10 of our product ranges.

The Londoner hosts a huge art collection and spotlights have been carefully used to best display them. Thousands of Lucent products provided architectural lighting for all rooms and penthouses consisting of downlights, LED strip/profiles and low level wall lights. All guest room and corridors are lit with Lucent LED strip and downlights - and Lucent also specifically designed a line 1 cell unit for this project. The stunning public areas, which rely on a mix of dramatic and intimate light, are also lit with Lucent downlights, and a sense of mystery is achieved balancing focus and accents, playing with reflections and shadows.

The resulting design has been awarded numerous prizes for design and architecture including a DALI award, nominated for a DARC award and numerous interiors awards.

The Londoner has not allowed its impeccable design credentials get away of sustainability, however. In line with Lucent’s own commitment to the planet (having just achieved carbon neutral status) the hotel implemented sustainable design solutions at all scales, using construction materials with a low environmental impact. The Londoner building is also set to use 30% less carbon than regulations demand. A truly pioneering project, that Lucent could not be prouder to be a part of.
