Lucent's commitments to the world so far....

Thursday, April 22nd 2021

Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement started in 1970.

The shift towards becoming more environmentally conscious and proactive in conservation is being felt across all areas of consumerism not least the lighting community. Although LED lighting achieved energy savings of 50-70 % compared to old technologies lighting still accounts for nearly 5% of global CO2 emissions.

Today seems a fitting day to summarise the ways in which Lucent Lighting have already committed to improving our environmental awareness and impact.

As you will have seen in this months arc magazine, in 2018 when Temeloy lighting set up the Lighting For Good think tank Lucent was one of it's first supporters. The aim of the charter is to "evolve innovation, services and reliability towards sustainability in the lighting industry". Throughout our work with Lighting For Good we have made the following changes:

Throughout the design process we have assessed the materials used in the manufacture of our products and have, in some cases, been able to manufacture fixtures free from plastic (except in the COB).

We are lucky to have always conserved an element of modularity in our downlights as they evolved from the MR16 fixtures. This means that as innovations in light sources evolve, we are able to quickly change the source within the downlights without having to dispose of the fixture and start again.

As a business we now have the understanding that you do not have to compromise the aesthetics in order to incorporate sustainability and environmental awareness.

At the beginning of this year we achieved our ISO14001:2015 Environmental Management certification. As part of this Lucent Lighting are committed to continuously improve our environmental management system and to continue to integrate recognised environmental management best practice into our business operations. We will endeavour to reduce our consumption of resources and improve the efficient use of those resources, manage waste generated from our business operations incorporating reduction, re-use and recycling in accordance with the principles of the waste hierarchy and manage our business operations to protect the environment and prevent pollution.

We will continue to ensure environmental criteria are taken into account in the procurement of goods and services and continue our ongoing monitoring of the amount of electrical equipment we place on the market and ensuring provision is made for its effective recovery.

Whats next?

By the end of 2021 Lucent Lighting will be investing in environmental projects around the world in order to balance out our own carbon footprint.
